HARMONIC MOTION is a music and dance performance group that focuses on folkloric and ethnic idioms and cross-cultural projects. Its core performers and teachers are musician/composer Joe Zeytoonian and dancer/percussionist Myriam Eli. They regularly participate in workshops and performances of Middle Eastern, Armenian, and North African music and dance as well as collaborations with jazz, avant-garde, modern, improvisational, flamenco, Indian, Balkan, African, Afro-Cuban, Sefardic, and other forms.
JOE ZEYTOONIAN is an udist, singer, percussionist, and composer who has received various Fellowship Grants and Honorable Mentions from the Florida Department of State, Broward County FL, and the National Endowment for the Arts, in addition to the 2000 Florida Folk Heritage Award from the Division of Historical Resources. He has recorded various albums of traditional Middle Eastern and Armenian music, as well as pop music with Gloria Estefan and Shakira. He is co-director of Harmonic Motion with Myriam Eli, with whom he has toured the United States, Turkey, Japan, and Latin America.
MYRIAM ELI performs traditional Middle Eastern, cross-cultural, and improvisational dance, and plays a variety of Middle Eastern hand drums and percussion instruments. She has received awards from the New York based American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance and Florida?s Broward County. The Florida Department of State has awarded her two Fellowship Grants and selected her as Master Teacher of Middle Eastern dance for the Folklife Apprenticeship Program. For eight years she taught Middle Eastern dance and drum to, choreographed for, recorded, and toured with pop rock singer Shakira. Ms. Eli played percussion and her choreography was featured on television in the following: MTV, Saturday Night Live, Latin Grammy, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, and The Rosie O?Donnell Show. She is co-director of Harmonic Motion with Joe Zeytoonian, with whom she has toured the United States, Turkey, Japan, and Latin America.

MYRIAM'S: 12:00pm-1:30pm
~ RHYTHMS AND ZILLS - The class includes structured improvisation & choreography to rhythms that Oriental dancers use frequently. Students work with rhythm patterns to create a zill/dance solo. If you have zills, please bring them to class
JOE'S: 1:45pm-3:15pm
~ MIDDLE EASTERN RHYTHMS AND PERCUSSION - lesson in technique of the darbuka or dumbek (hourglass-shaped hand-drum). The class will cover rhythms from Arabic countries and Turkey.
