Beginner tribal fusion belly dance is now offered at Rodrigo Jimenez'
new studio, World Dance Center, in NE Charlotte. The beginner class
emphasizes isolation and movement drills, and we will advance to work on
non-contact lead and follow style that can be danced in groups -- tribal
style, using movements from ATS and other tribal vocabularies where
compatible. The emphasis is on group dynamics, spatial and rhythm skills,
and improvisation rather than choreographed performance. Cynthia has 8
years of belly dance experience in both tribal and traditional Egyptian
styles, as well as several years experience with latin dances and
American ballroom. For ballroom dancers who want to work on more freedom
and range of movement in their hips, ribcage isolation, posture, core
strength, frame, etc. this is a great dance style to cross-train in. The
class is on Thursday evenings at 7:00, at 3116-F Milton Road (near the
intersection of WT Harris and Sharon Amity) weekly except 6/12 and 6/19.
$10 or 10/$80. Classes are also offered at the UNCC Student Activity
Center during term for UNCC students and staff -- contact me for current
schedule information. Questions about the classes? E-mail me at

Introduction to Tribal Belly Dance with Kalima at The Treehouse, upstairs, 506 S. Salisbury Ave., Spencer, NC.
Tribal Style Belly Dance is unique in that rather than learning set choreography, you learn a language of dance that is spoken around the world. You learn a series of steps and cues that you can put together into your own unique dance, anyway you want, and you can share your unique expression of the dance with anyone else who knows the basic dance vocabulary. In fact bring friends and learn it together, then go enjoy dancing at drum circles and parties and sharing the joy of dancing together with friends.
This introductory class is based on the work of Carolena Nericcio, founder of Fat Chance Belly Dance, creator of American Tribal Style (ATS) belly dance. We will learn eight basic steps that form the foundation of the ATS vocabulary, as well as skills needed to put them together in a group dance. Once you've had this introductory class you can explore the whole world of Tribal Improvisation, either by advancing you ATS skills or exploring other Tribal styles. This class is a prerequisite for all future Tribal classes at Kalima Tribal. $15 per class, or four classes for $50. For more information and to purchase flexible class cards, contact Kalima at KalimaTribal@carolina.rr.com.

Each class will focus on a specific move (technique, drill, and condition exercises to help with improvement) and end with fun combos that can be used for improv and choreography practice! Bellydance, From the Center of Yourself with Gozde in Apex at Harmony Pilates Studio. The ageless mystique of bellydance flows from a graceful partnership between music and physique. A dancer’s range of expression is powerful and integrates movement throughout body, mind & spirit. This course in classic bellydance works with the basics of supporting, stretching and strengthening the body. As we learn technique, we’ll explore how these basics integrate a relationship between the music and our own personal expression. All of this play and learning springs from balanced posture and movement, and the rhythms of the Middle East will enhance our study. We will focus on basic isolations, including slides, lifts and making hypnotic circles with chest and hips. Add in the fluid grace of snake arms, the simmering heat of shimmies, and we’ll be on our way, dancing the Silk Road together. Prerequisite: None Attire: Please wear comfortable clothing that will allow the instructor to easily see posture and body movement. We suggest anything appropriate for Yoga (including athletic bras, close-fitting T shirts, broomstick skirts, stretchy pants). We normally dance barefoot, and if you have a long scarf you can tie around your hips, bring it! $100 per person.

Technique Intensive Series with Sara at World in Motion, Morrisville Station, 10235-500 Chapel Hill Road, Morrisville NC. In the January/February installment of Sara’s workshop/class series Technique Intensive, we’ll be working on finger cymbals AKA zils–how to play interesting patterns with them and dance beautifully at the same time! We’ll discuss zil tones and rhythms, and learn helpful drills to hone your zil skills. We’ll also learn about Middle Eastern music–how to identify common rhythms and melodies and how to match your movements to the music. This class is appropriate for continuing beginners (6-12 weeks of experience) and up. We’ll start from the absolute basics, so even if you’ve never put a pair of zils on your fingers before, you’re welcome in this class. And just like always, teacher feedback and individual assistance are a major part of this class. It’s strongly recommended that you buy your own pair of zils for this class, but we will have some loaners available as well. Please wear exercise pants, shorts, or capris (in other words, not a skirt).
The March installment of Sara's series will be a Choreography Intensive: Do you want to create your own bellydance choreography, but you’re not sure where to start? Do you want to add depth and drama to your future choreographies? Come to Sara’s Choreography Intensive! Using activities and games that anyone can do, Sara will demonstrate a multitude of different ways to generate compelling choreography. She’ll cover a number of topics, including movement dynamics, line, shape, use of stage space, repetition, musicality, visualizations, and more!
In addition to activities during class time, this course will also include some (fun) homework exercises to help each student develop their own unique choreography. Each student will have the option of submitting music to Sara so that their chosen track can be used during class time. Finally, every student will have the option of performing one minute of their choreography during the last day of class for group feedback.
This class is appropriate for any student who is interested in performing as a soloist. Students from all dance backgrounds are welcome, though it is strongly suggested that participants have at least six months of previous bellydance experience. Please bring a journal and a video device (if possible) to class.
The extended length of each class will allow for more in-depth exploration of class material and a greater opportunity to drill each move and combination under Sara’s guidance so as to achieve greater mastery of them in a quicker fashion than in the typical class setting. For more information, visit http://www.worldinmotiondance.com
